The GMC JC Men's Soccer team are in uncharted waters now as they have reached their goal of winning the GCAA Conference Championship by beating Andrew College, 2-1. By winning this game the Men's team wrapped up the Conference Championship and secured their spot in the District Championship for the first time in program history. The team is currently on a 8 game win streak, which has pushed their overall record to 12-4. After starting their season at 4-4 with a very challenging first half of their schedule, they are seeing the fruits of that tough schedule as it has prepared them for their push to the Conference Championship. Head Coach, Dave Sexton stated, "The players are very excited for two reasons: making GMC men's soccer history, but more importantly that they get to participate in the post-season play (District tournament in FL) and so preparation for which is very much on their minds at the moment! It's a bit too early to reflect on any season success yet as we are not done yet. Perhaps when the season is over we can all sit down and look back at what a good run this has been for them and the program."
For the Men's team there have been a group of sophomores that have been leading the way: Jack Arra (12 goals, 14 assists in 13 games), Taku Mashingaidze (team captain, 9 goals and 11 assists), Rahman Zekiri (organizes the defense), and Chris Velez (played in every game and has made a significant contribution in each). With the help of these three the team has been averaging 4.6 goals a game during the 8 game win streak. The overall team performance has been very solid with the offense scoring on 90% of its shots per game as well as the defense is only allowing 1.30 goals a game. The team will have over 10 days off in which they will use that time to get everyone healthy and ready for the playoff run as well as fine tune some details on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.
The opponent for the District game is still yet to be determined, but we do know that the team will be playing in Florida on November 4th and 5th for the District Championship and to earn the right to advance to the NJCAA National Championship. Once the regular season is finished then the Bulldogs will be notified of location and opponent. Stay tuned as we will send out the information to all media and social media networks.
